AACD Announces New Leadership

President-Elect: James Hastings, DDS
Dr. Hastings is a graduate of the Indiana University School of Dentistry. He established a general dental practice in Placerville, CA, in 1981, where he practices and lives today. Dr. Hastings joined the AACD in 1994 and earned its Accreditation credential in cosmetic dentistry in 1998. He was elected to AACD’s Board of Governors the next year. During his tenure as a member of the credentialing board, Dr. Hastings assisted in the revamping and streamlining of the examination process, and served as board chair for two years, when the board was re-named to become the American Board of Cosmetic Dentistry.


Vice-President: Joyce Bassett, DDS
Dr. Bassett practices cosmetic and restorative dentistry in Scottsdale, AZ. Dr. Bassett is an AACD Accredited Fellow Member, an associate member of the American Academy of Esthetic Dentistry, an active member in the Academy of Fixed Prosthodontics, and a KOIS mentor. She has an AGD Fellowship, and is past president of the Arizona AGD. Dr. Bassett teaches the aesthetic continuum at the Arizona School of Dentistry and is the founder of Women Teaching Women Cosmetic Learning Facility. She received the volunteer dentist of the year for Arizona CASS dental clinic, is a member of the editorial board of several peer-reviewed publications, and a published author in PPAD, Inside Dentistry, Dental Economics, AGD Journal and Compendium.


Accredited Member Seats: Greg Wright, DDS
Dr. Wright is a graduate of the University Of Oklahoma College Of Dentistry. Upon graduation in 1988, he accepted a general practice residency with the V.A. Hospital in Dallas, Texas. In 1989, he joined a practice in Grapevine, Texas, as an associate. He and his wife, Cindy, opened their own private practice in Southlake in 1992. Dr. Wright joined the AACD in 1994, earning AACD Accreditation in 2000 and Fellowship status in 2008. Wright has served on many AACD committees and chaired the Written Exam Committee. Currently he is serving as an examiner for both Accreditation and Fellowship, and as a contributing editor for the Journal of Cosmetic Dentistry.


Chiann Gibson, DDS
Dr. Gibson was born in Tokyo to Taiwanese parents but grew up in Texas. She received her Bachelor’s degree at the University of Washington, and her Doctorate of Dentistry at Tufts School of Dental Medicine. Dr. Gibson received the honorary title of “The Official Dentist Of The Miss Universe Pageant,” in 1998. She won Mrs. United States 2005--the first naturalized Asian American, first dentist, and the first Illinois representative to bring home the crown. Dr. Gibson was named one of America's most outstanding female dentists and featured on cover of "Woman Dentist Journal" in September 2006. She wrote a column for the Naperville Sun dental health and wellness, "Open Wide," and has been published in Contemporary Oral Hygiene, a Proctor and Gamble book: “Oral Health & Pregnancy Questions Answered," and the Journal of Cosmetic Dentistry. She served on the AACD Board of Directors in 2009-2011. Dr. Gibson practices general and cosmetic dentistry in Naperville, Ill. 

Ossie Vereen CDT, MDT
Mr. Vereen was first introduced to dentistry in the U.S. Navy, where he was a chair side dental assistant for four years. After leaving the Navy, he attended Bates Technical College in Tacoma, Wash., graduating at the top of his class. He was employed by a small four person dental lab for three and one‐half years where he continued to develop his skills and techniques and obtained certification in ceramics. He then opened Vereen Dental Technology, specializing in predictable esthetics. He continued to develop his skills by graduating from the Dawson Center and completing the Master Dental Technologist program recognized by New York University School of Dentistry. He also became an affiliate of the University of Washington Graduate Prosthodontics program while taking classes at the Kois Center. In August 2010, while fabricating a screw retained implant for tooth #8, he suffered a stroke which threatened his life, business, and profession. But with perseverance and faith in God, he is on the mend. In June 2011, he graduated from Kois. With 36 years of experience in dentistry, he is now more passionate about quality and consistency in the work he produces. 

Steven GhareebGeneral Member: Steven Ghareeb, DDS
In 2004, Dr. Ghareeb received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from West Virginia University School of Dentistry. He practices in South Charleston, WV, focusing on cosmetic and restorative dentistry, implant placement and orthodontics. Dr. Ghareeb received his AGD Fellowship in 2009 and is pursuing AACD Accreditation. He is the founder and president of the WVACD, president of the WVAGD, and delegate to the WVDA. Dr. Ghareeb serves on the AACD Board of Directors, and on the AGD’s Dental Practice Council. He is a past president of his local component dental society. Dr. Ghareeb is an adjunct clinical professor of WVU School of Dentistry and teaches dental assisting to the local vocational school. He also volunteers regularly through his community dental clinic for the underprivileged and through the AACD Charitable Foundation's Give Back a Smile program. 

General Member: David Yoshimaru, DDS
Dr. Yoshimaru was born in Santa Monica, CA, and grew up in Culver City. His father came to the U.S. from Japan in 1957. His mother followed in 1960. He speaks Japanese fluently. Dr. Yoshimaru attended UC Irvine where he double majored in Biological Sciences and Psychology, completing his education at UCLA School of Dentistry. He and his wife, Gennifer, have been married since 1990. They have two children, Luc, 9, and Justin, 21. Dr. Yoshimaru is a weekend triathlete, and enjoys running, cycling and swimming. He says, “There is never enough time to make meaningful progress in any of those endeavors, but I am always hopeful. I love to travel and do so frequently with my family. Nothing opens your mind more and broadens your perspective more than seeing the many diverse cultures that inhabit our Earth."

Laboratory Representative: Quint Whipple, CDT
Mr. Whipple has been a dental technician for 20 years and a cosmetic dental lab owner for 9 of those years. He is a 12-year member of the AACD, a graduate of the Las Vegas Institute and a two-time AACD Smile Gallery Award Winner. He teaches technician courses on contour and waxing and has been published in professional articles. He has spent hundreds of hours in clinical continuing education institutions collaborating with leaders in dentistry on how to improve doctor/technician communication to achieve the optimal cosmetic and functional result in restorative dentistry. He is fluent in multiple schools of thought relating to occlusion and is committed to patient health, natural esthetics, longevity of restorations and the dental profession overall.

Corporate Representative: Michael O'Malley
After receiving his degree from Roosevelt University, Mr. O'Malley began his career in hospital administration. Since that time, he spent the bulk of his career in the healthcare industry as administrator of group practices of medicine and dentistry. More than 30 years ago, he co-founded Cosmedent and has been president/CEO since its inception.

University Representative: John Calamia, DMD
Dr. Calamia is a Full Professor and Director of Aesthetic Dentistry for the Department of Cariology and Comprehensive Care at New York University College of Dentistry. He has taught Restorative Dentistry and dental material science at NYU Dental Center for 33 years and is recognized worldwide as co-developer of Etched Porcelain Laminate Veneer Technology. His work on porcelain etching and Silane coupling agents led to his placement of the earliest recorded Etched Bonded Porcelain Veneers in October 1982. These restorations are still successful. Dr. Calamia joined AACD in 2000, and was a University Member on the AACD Board of Directors from April 2003 to May 2007. He has chaired the AACD University Advisory Council, served on the AACD Board of Directors as the General Membership Representative from 2008-2010 and as Chairman to Advocacy and protection of the Credential committees. He was re-elected to the AACD Board of Directors as University Representative 2011-2013.


American Board of Cosmetic Dentistry Members:
David Chan, DMD

Dr. Chan earned his DMD degree in 1989 from Oregon Health Sciences University. He has been practicing for over 23 years and maintains a full-time practice focused on cosmetic and comprehensive dentistry  located in Vancouver, WA. Dr. Chan is an AACD Accredited member. Currently, he serves as president of an affiliate study club of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry  and as a mentor at the Kois Center in Seattle. He has been an active member of the AACD for over 10 years and is very proud of what the AACD stands for. Dr. Chan has a passion to provide the very best dental care for his patients and cherishes the priceless camaraderie of his peers. Dr. Chan has lectured nationally and has been published widely, including several articles  in the prestigious “Journal of Cosmetic Dentistry”. In his personal time, Dr. Chan enjoys traveling with his wife Liann, bicycling and photography.

Marilyn Calvo, DDS
Dr. Calvo is a 1979 graduate of the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) School of Dentistry.  She has been in private practice for more than 30 years and currently practices in Encino, CA, where she focuses on cosmetic restorative dentistry. Currently, she is a Visiting Faculty Member at the Spear Institute in Scottsdale, AZ. She is an Accredited Member of the AACD, and has been a featured dentist on “Ten Years Younger,” the TLC TV show. Dr. Calvo has for many years volunteered at a local children’s dental clinic, served as Co-Chairman of the UCLA Dental School Apollonians, and volunteered with National Charity League. Nominating and Leadership Development Committee:

James Hodge, DDS

Dr. James C. “Jim” Hodge has practiced dentistry since 1976, and has owned his practice since 1978 in South Pasadena, Calif. He served as an alternate on the NALDC this past year. Dr. Hodge has been married to his wife, Sue, for 14 years and they have five children and five grandchildren (soon to be six). Hodge has served two terms on the City Council of South Pasadena, including service as Mayor. In 2003, he founded and organized a citywide fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, South Pasadena Relay for Life, which celebrates its eleventh anniversary in 2013. Since 1999, he has taken a keen interest in refining his skills in the field of cosmetic dentistry. He joined the AACD in 2002, and earned Accredited Member status in 2011. In his spare time, he plays competitive league tennis and has been on two national championship teams, first in 1990, and more recently on a 60-and-over team in 2009.
