The AACD was thrilled to honor some of its most accomplished and dedicated professionals with Evy awards during the Celebration of Excellence Gala Reception on April 30th at the 32nd Annual AACD Scientific Session in Toronto.
 
The AACD Celebration of Excellence Award statuette has been dubbed “The Evy,” in honor of the late Dr. Jeffrey Golub-Evans, who was the creative force behind the award’s design.
 
Evy recipients are first nominated for the award by their colleagues and then are selected by the Awards and Recognition Committee. Evy award winners represent the most exemplary and talented individuals within the AACD and the industry who are dedicated to advancing excellence in the art and science of cosmetic dentistry and to the highest standards of ethical patient care.
 
The 2016 Evy recipients and their awards are as follows:

	John F. Weston, DDS, FAACD 2016 Excellence in Cosmetic Dentistry Education
Dr. Weston advances the art and science of cosmetic dentistry as a dependable presence at the lectern, having lectured and instructed workshops at every AACD scientific session since 2006. He has served two terms as a chairman of the Professional Education Committee for the AACD's annual Scientific Session, and as an Accredited Fellow, he continues to volunteer his time and expertise to mentor colleagues who are attempting to earn their AACD credentials.
	Christian Coachman, DDS, CDT 2016 Outstanding Innovation in Cosmetic Dentistry
Dr. Coachman is a progressive thinker when it comes to digital smile design and cosmetic dentistry education. His research based methods for creating 2D and 3D smile designs improve results for patients, improve communication between dentists, specialists, and labs, and raise cosmetic dentistry to a higher level. And his contemporary approaches to sharing digital smile design principles through social media platforms, like his live video feeds through Periscope, captivate dental professionals the world over.
	Tesa H. Reeves, DDS 2016 AACD Humanitarian Award
Dr. Reeves has already made a substantial impact on the dental health of those in her community. Her Free Dental Day has grown from one dentist helping 40 patients to 20 volunteer dentists, dozens of dental students, and hundreds of dental staff professionals and community volunteers helping over 400 people receive much needed dental care and medical screenings. She has even extended her philanthropic reach to the critically underserved Amish community of her hometown of Pulaski, Tennessee.
	Nelson A. Rego, CDT, AAACD 2016 AACD Outstanding Service to the Academy
Mr. Rego’s involvement in the AACD has been extensive and influential. He has served as Chair of the American Board of Cosmetic Dentistry, as the Accreditation Chair, and as an Accreditation Examiner and mentor. In each of these roles he has gone above and beyond, selflessly serving the Academy and helping shape it into the organization it is today.
	Adamo E. Notarantonio, DDS, AAACD 2016 AACD Rising Star Award
Dr. Notarantonio has a passion for cosmetic dentistry and the Academy that is unparalleled. Because of that passion and his dedication to the credential, he was elected to Chair the American Board of Cosmetic Dentistry. In this role, he has demonstrated his leadership style and revealed his potential.  A communicator, an independent thinker, a great listener, and a gentleman, he’s likely to become a household name in AACD leadership.

Kevin M. Brown, DDS, AAACD
2016 Journal of Cosmetic Dentistry Award

Dr. Brown’s work is illustrative of the AACD mission. His article “Time Saving Techniques for Common Emergencies” depicts minimally invasive dentistry and shows in detail how to perform successful Class IV composites, especially with trauma cases. Full of practical techniques that result in great clinical outcomes, this article can help all members create Accreditation quality work.
 
Douglas R. Wall, DDS, President, Orange County Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry 
2016 Affiliate Leaders Award 

Dr. Wall’s leadership has not gone unnoticed. As President of the Orange County Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, his strong example has motivated others to step forward into leadership, and he has moved the organization forward by instituting best association practices.
 
John R. Calamia, DMD
2016 Lifetime Achievement Award 

Among Dr. Calamia’s many accomplishments is having co-developed Etched Porcelain Laminate Veneer Technology. His work in this area led to his placement of the earliest recorded etched bonded porcelain veneers in 1982; restorations that are to this day a mainstay in any cosmetic dental practice.

 

This significant contribution to the profession is rivaled by his work educating dental students. His legacy includes thirty-five years of teaching restorative dentistry and dental material science at NYU Dental Center, starting the Aesthetics Honors Program at NYU, and editing the text books used to provide a comprehensive aesthetic curriculum to dental schools all over the world.
 
Though it could be argued his greatest accomplishment has been the bridge he has built between the AACD and academia. As Chairman of the AACD University Advisory Council, Dr. Calamia oversaw the growth of this council to include 44 schools, and he was instrumental in developing the AACD University Forum. As his colleague tells it, “He understands the importance of getting students, residents, and young dentists involved for the betterment of the AACD . . . he simply loves cosmetic dentistry, loves educating students, and LOVES the AACD.” And from his nominations, it is clear that his colleagues love him.
