Selecting Your Cosmetic Dentist
The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD) is the largest international dental organization dedicated specifically to the art and science of cosmetic dentistry. Founded in 1984, the AACD has nearly 8,000 members in the United States and more than 70 countries around the globe. Members of the Academy include cosmetic and reconstructive dentists, dental laboratory technicians, educators, researchers, students, hygienists, corporations and dental auxillaries. AACD members seek out continuing education through lectures, workshops, and publications in order to keep up-to-date with all of the advancements in cosmetic dental techniques and technology.
In order to make sure your dentist is skilled in cosmetic dentistry, the AACD recommends that you ask for the following items before undergoing treatment. As is the case when undergoing any dental treatment, please consult with your dentist to find out which procedure is right for you.
Before and After Photos - Examine the dentist's treatment results on other patients to make sure his or her work fits your dental needs.
References - Get a sense from other patients as to what type of quality care the dentist provides.
Continuing Education - Be certain that your dentist has taken continuing education courses to keep him or her up-to-date with the latest techniques in clinical cosmetic dentistry.
Finding a Cosmetic Dentist Near You - You can find an AACD cosmetic dentist near you right now by using our online referral system here or by calling us toll-free at: (800) 543-9220.
AACD members care about their patients' satisfaction with their new smile. That's why they participate in the following AACD programs to enhance their clinical skills.
Each year the AACD hosts the world's largest scientific session based solely upon cosmetic dentistry. Dental professionals from around the world gather for a week of intensive continuing education courses intended to keep AACD members up-to-date and in-tune with the latest innovations in dentistry.
The Journal of Cosmetic Dentistry is the #1 publication for cosmetic dentistry. All AACD members receive the quarterly clinical publication as part of their membership. Written and edited by experts in the field, The Journal of Cosmetic Dentistry is the leading print authority for clinical procedures in cosmetic dentistry.
The AACD offers two advanced credentialing programs, Accreditation and Fellowship.
AACD dentists strive to obtain the designation of Accredited member by taking continuing education courses and passing through a rigorous examination process. This process includes a written exam, which exhibits technical proficiency in cosmetic dentistry; a clinical exam, where dentists seeking Accreditation submit their clinical casework for critique by a panel of their peers; and an oral exam, where candidates present what they have learned.
An Accredited AACD dentist may choose to continue the pursuit of clinical education by striving for Fellowship in the AACD. Fellows of the Academy have achieved this distinction by submitting 50 clinical cases that exhibit competence in cosmetic dentistry as defined by the judging panel.
